Rigid Gas Permeable Contact Lenses

Rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses are used for fitting people who have irregular corneas from conditions such as keratoconus or corneal grafts. They are also frequently used for high prescriptions, in particular high astigmatism.

RGP lenses provide excellent clarity of vision and optics. They can be a first-line option for any contact lens wearer, although they require a period of adaptation which isn’t required for soft contact lenses.

RGP contact lenses can offer excellent long-term corneal health, handling and vision.

Traditional hard contact lenses, made of PMMA, were not gas permeable. The advent of gas permeable materials, which are continually improving, has eliminated issues that used to be caused by traditional hard contact lens materials.

Wearers of all kinds of contact lenses should have eye exams annually.
