What is it?
An inflammation of the eye lid margins - the area of the lid where the skin meets the eyelashes, this is also the area where our meibomian glands that help the surface of the eye sit.
What causes it?
It is like a dermatitis of the eyelids, which is caused by an overgrowth of the normal bacteria that live on the lid margins. Untreated, it can cause corneal infections and conjunctivitis.
Signs and Symptoms
Blepharitis symptoms often will come and go over a period of time.
Some symptoms you could experience include:
Burning/irritation of eyelids.
Crusty lashes.
Gritty/dry eyes.
Pink/red eyes. Sometimes including light sensitivity.
Treatment
Upon consultation with your optometrist they will determine the severity of your blepharitis to determine your appropriate course of treatment.
Treatments include:
Prescription eye drops and ointment,
lid cleaning regimes
oral antibiotics and
lubricating eye drops.
