About Us

A little bit of history
"Unique among professional societies..."

Formed in 1958, the Cornea and Contact Lens Society’s members include both ophthalmologists and optometrists. This makes us unique among professional societies and is a contributing factor to the generally friendly and collegial relationship that these two groups enjoy in New Zealand. Our members have a common interest in providing safe methods of vision correction and promoting research into aspects of corneal health and contact lens development. The society was formerly known as the New Zealand Society of Contact Lens Practitioners but our name was changed in 2006 to reflect our members’ interest in the anterior eye in its own right rather than just as a platform for contact lens wear. Our meetings are characterised by excellent education, great social events and a degree of informality.

Jagrut Lallu
President
Jagrut graduated from the University of Auckland with honours and a host of undergraduate awards in 2009. He began working for Visique Rose Optometrists in Hamilton the same year and he has relished learning the art of contact lens fitting from his colleagues Paul Rose and Peter Walker. He has a special interest in the irregular cornea, disease and orthokeratology. He’s now an owner of Rose Optometrists and also of Innovatus Technology which provides services to practitioners and manufacturers for rigid contact lens design through topography. He has presented at the CCLSNZ conference in 2009 and at the OSO conference on the Gold Coast in 2010. He was awarded Snowvision scholarship to study at SUNY in 2010.
Roberta McIlraith
Councillor
Roberta has been an optometrist since 2003, working for the majority of that time in a specialty contact lens practice in Christchurch (Curtis Vision). She enjoys all patient interactions but especially controlling myopia with orthokeratology and soft lens designs and the challenge of fitting kerataconic corneas. The most rewarding aspect of her job is correcting eyes that have previously struggled to see. She has spent time in contact lens research in England and some years locuming throughout Australia. I have been a member of the CCLS in New Zealand since she graduated and as a recent addition to the council, where I hope to be of great assistance to a fantastic and enthusiastic team.
Anne Matheson
Immediate Past-president
Anne has been an optometrist since 1986 when she was fitting RGP lenses to sporty astigmatic teenagers and Cibasoft tinted lenses to middle-aged hyperopes in the wilds of West Auckland. These days she’s a director at Sercombe and Matheson Opticians in central Wellington where she’s more likely to be fitting multifocal disposable lenses to her presbyopic contemporaries, trying to take the perfect slit-lamp photo or getting to grips with the practice’s OCT. She has been NZAO branch chairperson in both Canterbury and Wellington. Anne likes swimming outdoors in summer and finds solace in movies and boardgames in winter when it’s not warm enough to swim.
Richard Newson
Secretary / Treasurer
A past president of the CCLS (1999-2001) and a long serving council member, Richard became Secretary/Treasurer in 2013. He is an optometrist, and the owner of Harrington Eyecare, based in the sunny Nelson Bays region. Richard enjoys the camaraderie and inter-professional stimulation that the CCLS provides.

Eleisha Dudson
Councillor
Eleisha is an optometrist with an interest in specialty contact lens fitting, orthokeratology and the management of anterior eye conditions. Originally from Dunedin, she now lives in Wellington and works in private practice in the central city. She’s currently the chairperson of the Wellington branch of the NZAO. New to the council in 2015, Eleisha is pleased to have the chance to contribute to the CCLS.
